In 2028, the McQuillan Institute will hold its seventh convening in Japan, where political turmoil is putting in question the foundations of Japan’s 1947 pacifist constitution. At that time, Japan renounced war as an instrument of policy and called upon its people to “desire peace for all time.” Today, a postwar political culture deeply committed to “high ideals” in human relationships and to principles of collective action confronts a fragmentation of that world order. This convening will explore the tensions and contradictions that Japan faces as a leading innovator and consumer of the technologies associated with the unraveling of the postwar settlement.
