In August 2027, the McQuillan Institute and the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research (WISER) will meet in Johannesburg for our fourth convening. Our venue is Constitution Hill, once the prison that held Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. Today, it houses South Africa’s Constitutional Court, and its entrance is illuminated by the eternal flame of democracy, lit in 2011 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the South African Constitution. Here, we will ask what the principle of emancipation demands of a young democracy confronting the overlapping crises of poverty, epidemics, and climate change.
